Art Of Redesign

CHANGING THE ARCHITECTURE

One of the first things they did was look at how to simplify the information architecture. From analysing user data it became quite clear that once a user gets to a certain point in their journey, they stop using the navigation and instead navigate through content.

The old site had multiple levels of depth, and subsections would often had bespoke navigation that was out-of-date, cluttered and poorly used.

So what they did was basically strip the navigation down to two levels: primary and secondary, and also changed some of the groupings used to categorise content. This allows users to quickly find their way to the main topics they’re interested in.

WIREFRAMING PROCESS

From the beginning the project was wireframed in HTML, which has a number of benefits. For example, you can immediately see how an idea will work in a browser and iterate from there. These wireframes are also easy to present and share. Instead of explaining the interaction, all the people engaged in the project could see it live on the page.

Each of the breaking points was designed in accordance to the rest to get the best results when the resolution changes. All the content was placed on pages according to it’s value and place in the hierarchy, rather than it’s size.

USING CONTAINERS

The Guardian research team decided to thoroughly check the users’ motives for opening the website.

There are three major ones:

“Update” is the most frequent motive and describes the journey of readers who visit the Guardian – often many times a day – to find out about the news-agenda in general, or about news from their area of interest, whether it is sports, culture, the economy, etc..

“Extend” describes the motivation to then gain a deeper understanding of a specific story, which usually demands more time than a quick news update.

“Discover”, is rather a whole group of motives, such as the wish to find inspiration and surprise, new perspectives, interesting debates with other readers or entertainment.

These research insights helped build the new website based on the readers’ typical journeys and needs.

They are built with what’s called “containers”, which are sets of builiding blocks. They “contain” words, pictures, videos, graphics and data. Editors can group them together flexibly, creating modular homepages and article pages to create a representation of what is important each day.

Having A Mobile-Optimized Website

Many People Nowadays Search For Businesses From Mobile Devices

Certain business types lend themselves to being searched for by mobile devices. Examples include restaurants, eateries, and specialty stores. After all, it is more convenient to search for a place to eat or to shop from the convenience of a mobile device, especially when one is on-the-go. If you’ve tried to access a non-responsive website from your phone, you know that it is often hard to read the text and you have to tap the screen twice in order to zoom in. This puts a major strain on one’s eyes.

However, a mobile or responsive site adjusts to the device size and width by adjusting the text size and placement, making it easier on the eyes. Also, the navigation bar is usually at the top represented by triple bars, which makes it easier to find and search for what you are looking for. The ease and convenience involved with a mobile-optimized website is a solid reason why people use their mobile devices to search for businesses and illustrates the importance of every business having a mobile optimized website. Gone are the days when a simple website could help your business get by.

Google Now Favors Mobile Optimized Websites

Google indicated that it would boost search engine rankings for websites that are mobile-optimized as part of the changes to their algorithm. This applies only when a search is conducted through a mobile phone or device. While only Google made this announcement as of the time this article was written, Google is a major search engine and other search engines are likely to follow suit. It is also important to note the increasing number of searches conducted through mobile devices.

While it is true that some business types are more conductive to being searched through a mobile device than others, there may come a time where more than half of searches are conducted through mobile devices for any business. If mobile usage reaches such a percentage, non-optimized sites will greatly suffer in the search rankings. Hence, having a mobile-optimized website would do a business more good than harm.

Creating an Amazing Page

The chances are great that you have a great deal of professional competition. That is not a bad thing at all. However, you need to have an edge that will make you stand out among your competitors. From the outside, your competitors may seem as though they offer exactly the same products and/or services that you do for less money. However, what those people don’t realize is that they are not actually comparing apples to apples.

Your About page, if done correctly, will express your human side and that is exactly what your prospective customers will respond to. If they understand that you are human, they can relate to you as one human being to another and what you share with them will resonate. It is important to keep in mind that even if you have a visually stunning website (or some other aspect of your Web presence), if you don’t have content that touches the other person in your About page, you may not make the kind of progress that you are hoping to make. Of course, the look and feel of your website is extremely important for your business but it is not the only thing that matters.

When a person ends up on your About page, the concept of WIIFM (What’s In It For Me?) must be crystal clear to him or her. That means that no matter how amazing you and your business are, if you can’t solve the other person’s problem, you won’t get anywhere. Of course, you want your website to attract other people but that is second to being able to solve the other person’s problems. Writing that content may be more challenging than you expected. You can convey a great deal with your About page content. This is really where you can make your human qualities shine. This is one of the main places in which you build credibility, trustworthiness, and your position as a subject-matter expert. It is where you begin a solid relationship with the other person. The content on your About page can potentially convince people who are on the fence that you are the one whom they should hire (or buy from). When considering how you want to write the content of your About page, a few important concepts should be considered.

    • The spin of the content: Going back to the concept of WIIFM, it is critical that you understand that you must address your content to the other person. The content must clearly convey that you can solve the other person’s problem. You will want to write about issues that the other person may be experiencing and definitely wants to eliminate. Along with that, you will want to bring up what the desired results will be. You must communicate how you plan to help the other person achieve that. You will want to concentrate on helping the other person, not yourself. However, don’t worry. Your needs will be met at the same time (or directly after you have helped the other person). If you aren’t sure where (or how) to begin this process, it may be helpful for you to make a list of potential problems and then you can narrow down the list when you communicate with the other person.
    • Make sure that you name your page appropriately: This is not a place to be cute or “clever.” You want to be perfectly clear about what the other person will find in your About page. The reason for that is that you want the other person to understand by the name of the page what to expect. If you are not clear with the name of the page, the other person may potentially be confused. If the other person is confused, there is a good chance that he or she will not stay on your website.
    • Share your story on your About page: Everyone has a story and you sure have one too. It isn’t a matter of you not having one. It is only a matter of how you communicate that story. If your writing is effectively, the other person will react to you emotionally and they will relate to what you are saying on an emotional level. It is very important that you show your vulnerability and softness as a person. The other person will appreciate the fact that you have revealed something meaningful about yourself, knowing that it wasn’t easy for you.
    • Convey why you stand out and why you are worth it: The fact is that you are trying to convince the other person to choose you and your business. In order to convince the other person to go with you, you need to clearly demonstrate why you are worth it and how you stand above your competition. You will probably have to work at that in order to get the message just right.

User Experience in Web Design

User experience or UX is a hugely important factor to take into account when designing a site, if you get it wrong then your visitors will hate your website, causing them to leave causing your website to lose your business money.

When designing a site you first have to take into account page speed. A website should load fast on both desktop and mobile devices, if it doesn’t then your visitor will leave before even seeing your site, or any of your business offers. Websites that are slow to load are quite often built on themes and have many plugins associated with them. Web developers often do this when they have no idea what they are doing. In my experience this is often the case with web developers that offer cheap packages. Their packages are so cheap because they will reuse the same theme over and over, this allows them to set up your website fast, it will look OK, but behind the scenes your website will run like a slug.

Another point to consider is the navigation. The navigation should be easy to use, stand out and it should show all of the most important pages, if it doesn’t then your users will struggle to navigate your website, once again providing them with a bad user experience.

If you’re selling products on your website then the user experience should not be ignored, because ecommerce websites in my experience are one of the highest offending sites you can get.

With ecommerce only slight changes can make a big difference to your bottom line. The button size for the buy now button, the buttons positioning, the buttons color all make a major contribution to the success of your online store.

As you can see from all of the above, the user experience is very important when it comes to developing your own website, if you ignore it you are leaving money on the table, and from above you can clearly see that you don’t have to make drastic changes when it comes to the user experience, all you need to do is make a slight adjustment here on there.

The purpose of such conversion is to equip your website with the essences of HTML or XHTML to boost its capabilities and overall performance.

This is why you should trust only an experienced team of designers and developers to provide you high quality conversion of PSD files to XHTML. Such a team is often capable of converting any design format, including PSD, JPG, EPS, PDF, TIF or PNG to enrich the business with the best of XHTML. Your website not only gets a professional look and catches more attention but also delivers superior user experience.

And once the level of user experience gets better, this automatically leads to higher conversations and better overall results for the business. The conversion also gives the ability to tinker with the website, fix its bugs and insert relevant keywords which results in superior rankings in search engine. With simple, effective and semantic coding, the website is made user-friendly and its elements are adjusted in a way to deliver superior web display.

Productive Workflow

Design versus Development at the Graphic Design Companies

Creating a website is nothing short of a war between the web designers and the developers.

For the designers, it is the aesthetics and the usability of a design that matter the most.

However, the priorities for a developer working next to the designer are functionality and the working of all the elements that make the design.

Client Feedback

Websites, before being made live on the web are shown to the client for feedback as well as for approval by the graphic design companies.

After the Photoshop file sent to the developers is coded for, a URL is created for the same.

This URL needs the approval of the client before it can be uploaded onto the browser and made live.

Fonts, images and sometimes, the whole layout may need to be changed as per the client’s requirements.

Making Things Work

A code-free and creative working space for the web designers can result in great designs that originate from how the designers envision a graphic element at the outset.

A key fact to note here is that the design in its flat mock-up stage may greatly differ from the working website which is about to go live, and it is at this stage where, according to the graphic design companies, maximum number of alterations need to be made.

The aim of a good web design is to effectively communicate both the user interaction and the experience, which are just as significant for the overall design process as is the effective conveying of the look and feel of the site.

Design a Creative Logo

Get inspired

The inspiration that is needed to jumpstart the ideas can come from a wide range of places. A great place to pick up a few ideas is the design-centric websites. Also, look for other sites aimed are creative art and design. When working offline, you can look at your local surroundings. There are often plenty of things around you that can easily give an awesome idea to start designing the logo.

Study logo design

Try to learn everything possible about logo design. A worthwhile logo is effective at delivering its intended message, as well as being visually enticing, sensible and unique. The basic idea is to create something that can clearly identify a brand. While the design process can be time-consuming and intricate, the finished design should be really easy to understand and appropriate for its business.

Research

It is essential to research your audience to make a logo that is not only visually pleasing, but also helps to build up a brand. It is useful to have a complete idea of the intended message before starting the process of creating the logo.

The research process can include studying the target market, how a business works, and what they do. Plus, it can benefit to look at past logos used. This can give a few ideas and makes it easier to create the next design that is an upgrade of any past efforts.

Choose fonts wisely

The chosen fonts are a critical element of an effective logo. The font is either a pre-set one or a customized typeface. If planning to create the custom font, try not to be overly trendy. It should be classy, readable and simple.

Use mood boards or mind maps

To get your creative juices flowing, it helps to use simple tools like mood boards and mind maps to think up different concepts and images. Try to use words that are directly related and alternatives to get a wider range of inspiration.
