Template Or Custom Design

“I cried all the way to the bank,” and he cried a lot as back in the day because from 1950 to 1970 Liberace was the highest paid entertainer in the world in 1970 he was earning 300,000 a week to perform in Las Vegas that’s the equivalent to f 2.8 Million a week in 2016.

So these few entertainers and all of them made zillions by the way, and I could mention much more – are really remembered a little for talent but mainly for the awesome shows they put on, the glitz the glamour, the excitement. No templates here, no run of the mill get on a stage play the piano, guitar and sing. These super famous entertainers were truly custom designs.

So what does all this mean to you? Well, the headline of the blog mentions a question we get asked every week and that is Template design or custom, and you most likely are asking the same question, so how does all this glitz and glamour back in the day music history help you with that choice?

It comes back to our favourite quote, “There is no second chance on a first impression” and the problem with designers that use a lot of templates is your first impression may also be somebody else’s!

You see some designers use templates that’s Liberace without the candelabra and sequins as its quicker and easier to make your website, and in this day and age, in all honesty, it also doesn’t take a lot of skill, a template here, a drag and drop there and zippity doo dah you have a website and its saving effective for them and hopefully they pass that saving on to you, but each website they build usually all look pretty similar.

A custom design, one that will make your business as the Kiss song went, “Shout it, Shout it out Loud” well that is a little trickier, it needs coding skill, design skill, Photoshop all sorts of skills to make that “One Off” that will without question make an awesome first impression rather than, “Haven’t I seen that Before” comment.

Reasons Choose Website Localization

Website localization engages more traffic

The prior purpose of having a multilingual website is to build a big consumer base amongst your target market. As your credibility increases and your users continue having positive experiences while visiting your website, there are higher chances that they will visit your website more often in the future. The more number of languages in which the website is available, more audience it will attract towards itself. Thus, increasing the traffic on the website.

Website localization increases revenue

The ultimate goal of any organization is to hit more and more target audience through their services and generate revenue. So, the more localized your website will be, the more people will be able to opt for your services and in return will generate more revenue for you. If your potential customers do not understand what your website is about due to language barrier, then you are losing potential customers.

Website localization helps you move ahead of your competitors

Having a multilingual website of your company gives you the leverage over your competitors. And the other way around, if your competitors too, do have it, then you probably don’t want them to enjoy that perk for a long time.

Enhance Your Website

  • Ensure that your website is user friendly. It must be easy for anyone to navigate your website. Each page must have a clear heading on the tab and it should not be contradictory. If a customer visits your website and lands on the home page, everything that is important needs to be visible at the stage. It should be easy for them to find the products or services page, the information about your business as well as a clear visible Contact Us button.
  • Have a visible Contact Us button. As mentioned above, the Contact Us button or page heading must be clearly visible. If a customer wants to contact you, make it easy for them.
  • Add enough information about the business. Many people are tempted to add this information on the Home page. Although that seems reasonable, writing a whole essay on the Home page is not necessary and will deter customers. Add the bulk of the information about your business on the About Us page. If the customer wants to know your full history, they will know where to find it.
  • Keep your Home page content concise. You want to grab the attention of the customer as soon as they land on your page. Add information that briefly describes what your business is about, your products/services, and, most importantly, what you can do for them. It is important to note the benefit you can bring to your customer’s life.

Principles of Responsive Web Design

Fluid Grid

Fluid Grids provide a flexible structure to your website using relative units like percentages based dimensions rather than pixels. Websites have always been defined in terms of pixels as they were traditionally browsed only on desktops but now with the advent of smartphones and tablets, a website can be easily searched on them. A website appears in a large format on a desktop screen, whereas the size shrinks as we switch on to a smartphone. Due to this it is better to build responsive websites on the basis of the grid system.

The fluid grids flow naturally within the dimensions of the screen displaying the content without any adjustments for different screen sizes. Under this, the maximum size of the layout for the design is specified and then the grid is divided into columns. Then each element is allotted a proportional width and height on the basis of percentage rather than pixel based dimension. So, when the screen size changes, the elements adjust themselves to the screen size.

For example, if a desktop screen has 4 columns next to each other, it will be portrayed in a narrow display when presented on a smartphone screen. But with the help of fluid grid system they will be placed on top of each other forming a single column.

Fluid Images

Images should also be able to adjust themselves within the specifications of a fluid grid. This can be done by adding a single line of CSS code: {max-width: 100%}. This notifies the browser that each image can be as large as the specified value and can never be stretched. If the parent container in which the image is nested up is smaller than the pixel value, then the image should shrink itself accordingly.

Breakpoints

Breakpoints allow the layout of the content to change at predefined points. Generally, it is advisable to add a breakpoint at a stage where a sentence breaks. Major breakpoints should be chosen wisely when the layout changes significantly. For example, if a mobile layout occupies 100% of the browser width when stretched to a desktop size, then there would be left some unfertilized space. Hence, while switching to the desktop screen the content should be rearranged in a presentable manner. Here comes the use of breakpoints.

Mobile or Desktop First

This approach involves designing a website for a smartphone first and then taking it upwards to tablets and desktops. Mobile devices have more features and applications like GPS, touchscreen etc in contrast to desktops. Even the designing part has to be done with utmost vigilance as there are limitations on sidebars and other peripheral content as well.

Joshua Johnson has put it articulately, “With a mobile first view point we start by loading the absolute bare essentials on the smaller platforms. This leads to a snappier experience that avoids unnecessary lag. The additional resources are loaded strictly as needed depending on the platforms that can handle them well.”

So, when we first deliver to the lowest common denominator i.e. the mobile user and then expand our branches further, we are able to satiate the users in a better way.

Web Fonts v/s System Fonts

Although the Web Fonts look stunningly stylish yet each of them needs downloading and if a major chunk is employed, it will take a long time to load the page. On the other hand, system fonts are lightning fast and the hold-ups are not involved in their application.

Bitmaps v/s Vectors

Bitmaps are images constructed by the use of pixels. By zooming in a bitmap image, individual pixels are visible which build up an image. Bitmap graphics can easily be edited by changing the colors of individual pixels using programs like Adobe Photoshop.

On the other hand, vector images are not based on pixels patterns but are constructed by mathematical formula involving lines and curves that can be combined to create an image. These are edited by fabricating such lines and curves using Adobe Illustrator

Bitmaps vs Vectors

Now, the clash between the two can be solved by ascertaining certain factors like if your icon has got some fancy stuff and lot of details then it’s better to use bitmaps. For this use, a jpg, png or a gif as these are well supported on the web.

Vectors are tiny in size as they just store the mathematical formula that make up the image. For vectors, the best choice would be an SVG or an icon font. The drawback with vectors is that these are not well supported online and some old browsers don’t even support it. So, you must make your decision wisely.

Website Landing Page

A simple phrase on the top of the page should be present. This phrase should give an overview of what the company does. For example, if you have an Online Directory Website your phrase could be: Generating More Leads for a Brighter Future.

Don’t overload the landing page with bright and overwhelming pictures. Make sure that your logo is present at the top of the page. This will immediately let a visitor know who the company is without having to search.

A sign up form is a nifty tool for your website’s landing page. Once a person has read the general overview of the page they will immediately want to sign up if you have interested them. Keep the form somewhere around the bottom of the page to prevent clutter on your pages.

A menu is necessary if you have a lot to offer your audience. This menu should be straight forward and in plain sight that has items linked to every single page. This makes the visitor feel more comfortable and relaxed without stressing about what to search for.

Capture your audience with a bold colour that is unique to your company. Using this bold colour for your main phrase will make your visitor more intrigued with your company. Using the bold colour for your phrase also won’t clutter the page with colours and elements.

Some websites contain a diagram on the landing page that tells a person the methods that the company uses. This diagram could also be a playful element that appeals to a younger demographic.

Try to include videos on the landing page. This will allow the visitor to view information about your company rather than read about it. A video is more captivating and engages your audience.

Insert social media buttons at the bottom or top of the page. This lets people know that you are trying to engage on different platforms. It also indicates that you are putting an effort into getting new customers and impressing existing clients. It also lets visitors know that they can engage with your business or a more personal social platform.

Mobile Website Redesign

Today, cell phones and other mobile devices have become a daily necessity. They are taken for granted, part and parcel of everyday life. There is hardly a person who can get up from bed without checking their phone first. The change in the way viewers are accessing the internet has put pressure on businesses. Any person who owns a website must make it mobile friendly.

When companies fail to give their visitors a satisfying experience on mobile devices, they will lose on a massive chunk of traffic. Moreover, a website that is mobile-friendly gets better search engine ranking. In so many words, every organisation necessarily should have a site that is mobile friendly.

Knowing the value of something is one side of the coin, the other is actually implementing it. But creating a website that works on every machine is not possible for amateurs. An excellent ecommerce website development company is the best bet, yet it doesn’t imply that one shouldn’t be aware of the steps that can be taken to redesign a website for phones and tablets.

What Should Be Done

  • Make it responsive

The very first step (and the most curial one) is to convert the site into being responsive. A responsive website is defined as the one that displays all the same data and content, no matter which gadget it is opened on. Additionally, it rearranges the information, images, and videos so that they fit perfectly to screen size. A website that is not responsive will not show the entire information present on the site when accessed through a small screen.

An added advantage is the preference Google gives to responsive web design sites which is excellent for SEO.

  • Make it accessible.

When people access a site on the mobile, there is a high probability they require quick information. Very few consumers open a website on a smartphone to leisurely read and browse through it. This means that a mobile viewer will not spend the same time searching through a site like the one on a computer. For a business, it equates to designing an accessible website.

The site should present the most vital information on the very first page or give access to it in the most visible section. When content is not easy to find, the user will leave and jump to another site. One way to make website mobile friendly is to put the link to FAQs on the first page so that navigating to the actual tab through a mobile gadget is not hard.

  • Add in the Viewport Meta Tag.

Any homepage that opens on a mobile at the same width as a PC will be hard to read for the users. To view and browse through the complete information, the viewer will need to scroll not only up and down but to and fro also. This makes the process awkward and cumbersome which will cause the user to drop the site and move to another.

A viewport meta tag is a simple method of controlling the width of a website no matter on which device it is opened. It automatically adjusts the breadth of the site based on the screen size on which it is reached. The tag has to be added to every HTML page of the website.

What Should Not Be Done

  • Get rid of autocorrect.

By default, the autocorrect is on when filling forms. It is also switched on in mobile devices. So, when a user is filling a form or a questionnaire on your website via a smartphone, it will automatically correct names of the person and address. This can make the process of filling the form drawn-out and exasperating. Switching off the autocorrect will make the visitor’s interaction convenient. They will not have to scroll back and change the autocorrected words to the actual spelling.

  • Remove flash.

Both iOS and Android phones and tablets do not support flash. Moreover, flash takes a lot of time load which slows the speed of a website page. In some extreme cases, flash fails to work on browsers and gadgets. Any website that still utilises flash will face one or all of these problems.

If your site has flash animation, a mobile user will not be able to access it. Thus, it is best to remove all flash elements from the website and design one that performs robustly even without it.

Flat Styles

Flat styles were definitely viewed as an answer to the limitations of skeumorphism. If the digital space had difficulty in accommodating the skeumorphic elements, the flat style was seen as a greater fit for the digital landscape with all its (the digital landscape’s) limitations. Today flat styles are regarded as one of the most dominant trends ruling web design. So, if you are in talks with a website designing company regarding the possible layout of your website, you should ideally expect them to know about flat designs. Here is more about them.

Flat styles look great when they are rendered within the restraints of minimalism but they are definitely adept at handling a considerable degree of complexities as well. At the very core of these styles is artistic minimalism. The immediate benefits of employing this particular style have been listed below:

  • Flat designs are compatible with responsive requirements
  • Since they are backed by structured and crisp visuals, they render an overall touch of visual maturity that hardly any other web layout can guarantee
  • Speedy loading times
  • Easy user navigation
  • Typography is simple, which in turn, facilitates readability

Today we have flat 2.0, which adds complexity to minimalistic layouts. While the older versions avoided the “grandeur” of shading, the new version employs it effortlessly. Today, flat layouts have embraced more dynamic colors or bright hues to compensate the lack of visual effects that its earlier versions were known for. The modern flat styles employ a string of energizing colors contrasted with a few dull elements in a bid to create a more engaging user experience.

The typography of this particular kind of layout consisting of sans serif and uniform stroke width remains simple and easy to read as well. It should not really be forgotten that designers put particular emphasis on readability while working with this particular style. The ghost button has emerged as almost a regular feature of this particular layout. It works well with the overall nature of this layout since it doesn’t scream for attention but is there to facilitate user experience as well.
